WESTERN CANADA

Hydrogen Corridors

The Western Canada Hydrogen Corridors Initiative is a strategic effort to advance hydrogen-powered transportation across Western Canada by enabling the development of hydrogen-powered trucking corridors along the key routes in Western Canada.

This project will be conducted in partnership with other organizations involved in these corridors and is funded by Alberta Ecotrust Foundation, Emissions Reduction Alberta and Alberta Innovates.

Mapping trucking routes for hydrogen trucking corridors

Led in collaboration with industry, government, and research partners, this project aims to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen vehicles, reduce emissions, and establish a sustainable hydrogen economy. This initiative fosters partnerships between hydrogen producers, distributors, fleet operators and end consumers to create a self-sustaining market.
Future expansion plans will explore additional routes, including Edmonton to Vancouver, Calgary to Great Falls, and more.

Why this matters?

Decarbonizing freight

Decarbonizing long haul heavy duty trucking can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Canada’s transportation sector.

Building the future

The initiative supports the development of production and refueling infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, new commercial business models and harmonization of standards.

Technology commercialization

This initiative aims to foster a unique partnership to de-risk the adoption of technologies in the early market stage, through forecasting demand and facilitating off-takes to create a self-sustaining market.

Phase 1 - Laying the foundation

The first phase of the initiative focuses on policy analysis, business case development, and industry engagement to establish a framework for a multi-year deployment. This includes identifying key stakeholders and supply-chain partners and analyzing infrastructure needs for fueling and vehicle deployment. This phase will also outline the financial support needed from the public and private sectors in order to establish  the corridors

Phase 2 - Moving towards a hydrogen economy

Phase two will enable establishment of the partnership to utilize funding and build infrastructure to develop the corridors, enabling the market to become competitive and self-reliant.
