A collaborative initiative that brought industry together to advance hydrogen transportation in Western Canada.
In 2023, momentum around hydrogen transportation in Alberta was growing through new vehicle pilots, fueling infrastructure development, and other mobility projects. Recognizing this shift, organizations like Edmonton Global and the Hub faced a bigger question: how could these individual projects contribute to a connected hydrogen transportation ecosystem capable of scaling across Western Canada?
To turn that momentum into a unified movement, Edmonton Global spearheaded the 5000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge, setting an ambitious goal that the industry could rally around.

To explore what it would take to reach that scale, the Challenge brought together stakeholders from across the hydrogen value chain through two workshops in 2023. Municipal and commercial fleets, fuel providers, vehicle manufacturers, government, academia and other industry partners worked together to identify shared barriers to hydrogen vehicle deployment.

Where the Work Is Going
The 5000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge started with an ambitious question about what hydrogen transportation at scale could look like. The work that followed helped build a stronger understanding of what it takes to get there and who needs to be involved. Today, that work continues through the Western Canada Hydrogen Corridors Initiative, with a focus on coordinated, real-world deployment across key transportation corridors in Western Canada.
