Current State Assessment: Zero Emissions Vehicle Awareness Initiative

About this Report

Published in 2024, this Zero Emission Vehicle Awareness Initiative report provides a snapshot of the state and commercial readiness of hydrogen-powered medium- and heavy-duty vehicles in Alberta at the time of publication. As Alberta’s hydrogen transportation sector continues to develop, some of the infrastructure, projects, costs and market conditions referenced in this report may have changed since 2024.

The report examines the infrastructure, technology, costs and market conditions needed to support wider hydrogen vehicle adoption. It assesses fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), hydrogen dual-fuel technologies and hydrogen internal combustion engines, alongside hydrogen supply, fueling infrastructure, workforce capabilities and safety standards. The report identifies heavy-duty trucking as a significant opportunity for hydrogen transportation and highlights Edmonton’s strategic position based on its hydrogen production potential, existing demand and connection to major freight routes. It also explores opportunities to develop hydrogen transportation corridors across Western Canada, particularly between Edmonton and Calgary and between Edmonton and Prince George.

What you will find inside the report:

  • A 2024 snapshot of hydrogen vehicle technology, infrastructure and commercial readiness in Alberta
  • Assessment of the availability and performance of hydrogen-powered trucks and buses
  • Total cost of ownership analysis comparing hydrogen vehicles with diesel and other zero-emission technologies
  • Review of hydrogen fueling infrastructure, production capacity and transportation pilots existing or planned at the time
  • Identification of strategic hydrogen trucking corridors and potential fueling locations across Alberta and Western Canada
  • Analysis of barriers to wider adoption, including vehicle and fuel costs, infrastructure, workforce training, safety standards and vehicle availability
  • Opportunities and funding mechanisms identified in 2024 to support hydrogen vehicle deployment and infrastructure development
